A fine, attrative brass Microscope with Traviss mechanical stage, signed on the base " J. SWIFT & SON, LONDON". I would date it back to late 19th c./early 20th c., say around 1900?
The microscope stands about 10 1/2" tall in its closed position. Coarse focus is rack and pinion with a fine focus knob mounted on top of the limb. The draw tube is marked "17 - 22". It has a triple-nosepieceand a collar for eyepieces. The swing out sub-stage condenser assembly with a variable iris diaphragm, and a filter holder. The plano-concave mirror is in very good condition on both sides.
Marked on the mechanical stage"541, J. SWIFT & SON, LONDON. PAT. No. 24345". The Will Traviss designed mechanical stage was introduced in 1894. The lateral movement knob turns two wheel rollers that move the slide along its path. A micrometer imprint scale on the stage allows exact positioning of slides. There is also a pair of slide clips.
There are three objectives marked: 2/3 in, J. SWIFT & SON, LONDON; P-A 1/6 in N.A.0.83 J. SWIFT & SON, LONDON. Both objectives are contained in matching brass canisters; the third one is contained in a brass container and the cap is marked "1/2 in, J. Swift, London". There are two eyepieces, marked 2 x 8 and 3.
The microscope is in very good condition, and it delivers beautiful clear images. The rack & pinion is moving smoothly. The microscope is finished in lacquered and japanned brass. It retains all its lacquer with only few light scratches on the bottom of the main tube.
The microscope and accessories are contained in itsdovetailedmahogany case with brass hinges, catches and a beautiful brass handle. There is a lock but no key, and an age crack on the back. There are also afew slides in the case.
Case measures approx. 11 1/2" x 8" x 5 3/4".Please see photos for details.
