The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad - A Thumbnail Sketch
The Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Company was incorporated in 1827 and existed more or less independently and successfully, for the better part of the next 150 years. Shortly after World War Two, the B&O - along with most of the other Eastern roads - was facing financial ruin in the face of growing competition and falling revenues.
The great railroad era in the East was in its death throes. A number of factors, some growing out of wartime experiences, some the consequences of decisions made decades before, had come together in the immediate postwar period to have a devastating impact on the railroads collective sustainability. The alternatives faced by managements were either consolidations and mergers, or slow liquidation on the way to oblivion.
In 1959 the C&O and the New York Central railroads waged a battle for the control of the B&O, which was won by the C&O. In defeat, the NYC would go on to merge with the Pennsylvania RR in 1968 to form the ill fated Penn Central. Ironically, prior to the First World War, the B&O was briefly owned by the PRR. Also at that time, the C&O was jointly held by both the PRR and NYC, but was desired by neither.
With the consent of the ICC, the B&O/C&O merger became official in 1963. Formal merger of the lines and operations would not happen until 1987, when the B&O was finally and fully absorbed by the C&O presaging the birth of the modern CSX Transportation Company shortly thereafter.
