THE GREATEST 16TH CENTURY LEXICOGRAPHICAL WORK IN ENGLISH, A CLASSIC IN THE STUDY OF THE HISTORY AND ORIGINS OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE, AND THE FIRST QUADRUPLE DICTIONARY IN ENGLISH.

The full title reads as follows:

“An Alvearie or Quadruple Dictionarie, continaing foure sundrie tongues: namelie, Engish, Latine, Greeke, and French. / Newlie enriched with varietie of Wordes, Phrases, Proverbes, and divers lightsome observations of Grammar. / By the Tables you may contrariwise finde out the most necessarie wordes placed after the Alphabet, whatsoever are to be found in anie other Dictionarie: / Which Tables also serving for Lexicons, to lead the learner unto the English of such hard wordes as are often read in Authors, being faithfullie examined, are trulie numbered. / Verie profitable for such as be desirous of anie of those languages. / .”

The colophon reads as follows:

“Londini, / Excudebat Henricus Denhamus Typographus, Guliemi Seresij unicus assignatus. / Anno salutis humanae / 1580.”

First published in 1573 as a three-language dictionary, this 1580 edition was expanded to four languages by the addition of Greek. It was revised by Baret shortly before his death and was edited for publication by Alexander Fleming. The work takes its title from the Latin for beehive, and, as Baret claims, was compiled from his and his students' notes by inverting the order to English-Latin. In fact, it is also based on Thomas Cooper's Thesaurus and Robert Estienne’s ‘Dictionarium Latino-Gallicum.’ Baret’s ‘Alvearie’ is the first dictionary to refer to "hard words," thereby laying the foundation for later monolingual English dictionaries. Dedicated to William Cecil, Lord Burghley, this edition includes additional dedications and elegies lamenting the author's recent death, including one by Mulcaster.

The highly evocative epistle ‘To the Reader’ begins as follows:

“About eighteene yeeres agone, having pupils at Cambridge studious of the Latine tongue, I used them often to write Epistles and Theames together, and dailie to translate some peece of English into Latine, for he more speedie and easie attaining of the same. And after we had a little begun, perceiving what great trouble it was to come running to me for everie worde they missed, (knowing then of no other Ditionarie to helpe us, but Sir Thomas Eliots Librarie, which was come out a little before:) I appointed them certaine leaves of the same booke everie daie to write the English before the Latin, & likewise to gether a number of fine phrases out of Cicero, Terence, Caesar, Livie, &c. & to set them under severall titles, for the more readie finding them againe at their neede. Thus within a yeere, or two, they had gathered together a great volume, which (for the apt similitude beetweene the good Scholers and diligent Bees in gathering their waxe and honie into their Hive). I called then their Alvearie, both for a memorial, by whom it was made, and also by this name to incourage other to the like diligence, for that they should not see their worthie praise praise for the same, unworthilie drowned in oblivion.”

For the letter ‘A,’ Baret gives the following as an introduction:

“As the name of the first letter in the crossrowe among the Hebrues, Greekes and Latines. But whether this common usuall order in our Alphabet or crossrowe, was so placed and appointed by counsel and learning from the beginning, or was shuffled togither by ignorance: neyther am I able, nor at this time have I sufficient leisure to determine. But howsoever the reast of the letters were driven to this order, it is of many supposed that nature hath taught A. to stande in the first place, as wee may easilye perceive by the first voice or confuse crying of yoong infants, which soundeth in the care most like to A. …”

THIS 1580 ‘ALVEARIE OR QUADRUPLE DICTIONARIE’ IS COMPLETE IN ALL RESPECTS. The volume comprises 852 unnumbered pages in double columns. It collates a8, b-y6, 2a-3n6, 3o4, 4a-4s4, 4t6 (including the final blank, which is present). The volume measures about 28.2 cm by 19.7 cm by 5.3 cm; each leaf measures about 272 mm by 189 mm.

The volume is attractively bound in modern calf decorated in blind and gilt in 16th / 17th century style. The binding is in excellent condition and shows only a few minor scuffs upon the boards.

Internally, the volume is in very good to excellent condition, with generally clean pages, clear print (both red and black) and ample margins throughout. The title is mildly toned and a little worn at the edges, with minor restoration at the upper outer corner and the lower outer corner. Leaves a2-3 are also very mildly toned and show a crease across the lower outer corner, not affecting legibility. Taken generally, this is a very appealing example internally.

In all, this is THE RARE AND HIGHLY DESIRABLE 1580 EDITION OF JOHN BARET’S ‘AN ALVEARIE OR QUADRUPLE DICTIONARIE,’ printed in English in folio at London by Henry Denham, BEAUTIFULLY PRINTED IN GOTHIC TYPE THROUGHOUT WITH LARGE INHABITED WOODCUT INITIALS, complete in all respects, in excellent condition, bound attractively in full modern antique-style calf, and CONSTITUTING THE BEST OF TWO 16TH CENTURY EDITIONS OF BARET’S ‘ALVEARIE,’ THE FIRST EDITION TO INCLUDE THE GREEK LANGUAGE, AND THE FIRST WORK IN ENGLISH TO INCUDE A DICTIONARY OF ‘HARD WORDES,’ and OFFERED WITH .
