One of the largest ethnic groups in Cote d'Ivoire (the Ivory Coast), the Baule people are well known for their fine artwork. As a people, they were one of the strongest oppositional forces to French colonization of West Africa, and as a result, have held quite closely to their cultural heritage throughout recent history. This has left much of their artistic tradition relatively in tact, and its history is better understood by its people in contemporary Cote d'Ivoire. Numbering around one million, the Baule are and have long been a society that values equality and are among the most egalitarian in West Africa. The result of this social structure is a highly complex and exquisite artistic tradition. Becoming a sculptor/artist was a matter of personal choice, rather than caste/family tradition, and so numerous unique and elaborate styles developed among the Baule people. Their figures and masks are among the most highly sought after by African art collectors.
This large and unsettling example of Baule art is referred to as the Mbra gbekre, or Monkey Figure. Though there is no real consensus as to the use and meaning of these figures, a number of ideas exist, most of which surround the practice of making sacrifices to the figure, a point which is said to contribute to the often heavily encrusted patina that these pieces frequently display. Associated with the Mbra cult, these figures are generally carved in the same stylistic fashion, upright, with prominent, sharp teeth, and a bowl or vessel of some type being held in the figure's hands, though in this case their appears to be a fruit, likely for offering purposes. This particular piece displays a dark brown patina, as well as some pigment, namely on the eyes, teeth, and offering. The figure is in good condition, displaying relatively minor wear marks and a few minor insect damage points, largely resulting from its age and exposure. An intimidating, yet beautiful piece of Baule art; this is a nice figure!
Dimensions of this piece are 19" x 6.5" x 7",
and it weighs in at just under four pounds.
Medium: Wood, Pigment
