From our smoke-free home we have:

An Exquisite HAND PAINTED Decorative TANKARD MUG from (Unmarked) ROSENTHAL Selb Bavaria, Hand Painted (Artist LH) RED CHERRIES with GOLD BANDS & BLACK Outlining, circa early 1900's

While this tankard mug is unmarked, it matches others that we have in the same mold which were manufactured by Rosenthal. In 1879 in Upper Franconia, Bavaria at Erkersreuth Castle, Phillip Rosenthal (1855-1937) founded a porcelain decorating studio using blanks supplied by Zeidler. His business grew to the point that in 1891 he built his first factory to produce porcelain using kaolin imported from Bohemia. The current Rosenthal website states from 1907 the company marks each product with its full name, thus the brand name of Rosenthal is born in 1907. In his book entitled Rosenthal, Dieter Struss states the addition of Selb-Bavaria to the mark occurs in 1910 and by 1922 the “dot system” was instituted to date the mark.

The condition of this tankard mug is excellent. We find one area of concern that we did not notice through washing, drying, photographing or cropping the photos. When we started the listing, we discovered a sliver off the foot edge which has black paint on it. We can not tell whether this is damage in the removal from the mold and painted black by the artist or after market damage which was skillfully painted black to cover a msihap. Either way, this is a beautiful mug and this mishap is really not visible. See just above the inventory number (1257) in the last photo. There is no rubbing to the paint. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches, crazing or hairlines. It is clean & white on the inside.

This heavy tankard mug has a base of 2 9/16" and a top diameter of 2 13/16". The widest diameter is 3 1/2". It is 5 3/8" tall.

The tankard mug is painted by a talented artist to be viewed from all sides. Rosenthal is well known for employing only very talented artists and this is painted in a professional manner with black outlinging off setting the gold bands that really makes the painting pop out at you.

As collectors ourselves, we tend to be very picky and find it necessary to point out anything we see. We believe you will be very intrigued with this antique decorative tankard mug.

Please view all pictures carefully as they are part of the description.
