Beautiful 1/6th Ruby Glass Ambrotype Of Very Young Union Soldier In Uniform For Sale
This is a remarkable find! This is a ruby glass ambrotype of a very young Civil War Soldier. The plate measures 2.75" x 3.25" inches with a visible image size in the oval frame of about 2.5" x 2.25", which puts it at about a 1/6th plate. The plate is on ruby colored glass and is very clear and bright. Plenty of contrast and midtones and the image is sharp and very well done. There are some blemishes on the plate but nothing that detracts from the image of this young man.The buckles on both his belt and sash, as well as the buttons on his jacket and buckle on his kepi were all gilded by the photographer. His expression is very telling, almost as if he has no idea as to what he is in for. When I come across images like this I often wonder what ever happened to the subject in them. Was he killed shortly after this was taken? Did he survive the war to build a wonderful life and family? Questions that will, sadly, never be answered. This ambrotype was purchased at a local estate sale and the person who owned it was just another collector so they had not ties that I am aware of to this young man. I cannot see any insignias or specific tells to what unit he was with or where this was taken. The gold frame around the plate is in good condition, with no loss of finish or corrosion issues. The cases lid has separated from the bottom (very common issue) and the leather outside surface shows the typical wear you would expect from a case this old. Overall this is a very fine example of a Civil War Soldier portrait and being that it is a ruby glass ambrotype makes it far more rare and collectable then one shot on iron. If you have any questions please feel free to ask. I am sorry, but I do not ship to any address outside of the USA and do not accept offers from anyone outside of the USA.
