Beautiful Ceremonial Paddle Austral Islands Polynesia.
This exquisite paddle has a rectangular shaft, flaring slightly toward the circular pommel, and a leaf-shaped blade with a slightly curved cross-section. The shaft and face of the paddle have been decorated with carved diagonal crosses, broken up on the faces into panels framed with triangles. There is a pattern of triangles running round the rim of the blade also. The reverse face of the panel is also covered in panels of diagonal crosses, segmented with rows of zigzags. There is a border round the edge of triangles and crosses. The pommel consists of a circle of nine anthropomorphic heads with protruding circular eyes, patterned with triangles, with curved lines on the face and triangles decorating the tops of their heads. There are two rows of scalloping underneath, decorated with zigzags then another row of zigzags joining the pommel to the shaft. The butt is decorated with triangles.
