Beautiful Antique Bebe Jumeau Bisque Head French Child Doll, Open Mouth 23”, #9 For SaleWelcome to our sale! Many of you know us as longtime collectors and sellers of antique and vintage Hallowe'en, Christmas, and Easter holiday memorabilia, paper ephemera, antique dolls and toys, and lovely old china and glassware. For your consideration, we present an absolutely gorgeous, antique, French Jumeau Bebe bisque socket-head child doll from the late 1800s. This sweet little girl has one of the most beautiful faces we have ever seen! She has an exquisite expression thathas that desirable, ideal Jumeau countenance we all search for.
Please meet Suzette. She stands 23” tall and she is unmarked except for the incised “9” on the back of her neck. She has some issues but she displays beautifully and we have been honored to have her as part of our collection for many years.
She is on what we believe to be her original French composition and wood ball-jointed body. This body is of the slightly later type with jointed wrists and incorporated thigh joints. Her hand-painted features are stunning and include those fabulous heavy and dramatic multi-stroke brows, hand-painted upper and lower lashes, delicate black-lined eyes, a sweet coral-shaded open mouth with a hint of a smile, soft and beautiful rosy cheeks, and six tiny teeth as well.
Her fixedcobalt blue glass paperweight eyes are simplygorgeous. This doll has the face of an angel! She evenhas pierced ears. Her wig is either antique or vintage and is in a lovely shade of medium ash blonde. It has waves and curls and curly bangs. Her pate is a quality replacement.
She is wearing an elaborate and very pretty silk and lace handmade gown in aqua blue and cream. We particularly love the lace overlay of the skirt and the pretty scalloped hem! Her hat matches her gown and is trimmed in lace. It has a rosebud and ribbon decoration and fabulous peachy-pink feathers as well.
Her undergarments include antique pantaloons that have lace trim and tie with a ribbon drawstring. She wears a full slip that also has lace trim and pretty pin tucks. Her socks are cream-colored and lacy and are of a later vintage. Suzette is wearing a lovely, laterpair of navy blue shoes with ankle straps and silver buckles.
This girl loves her jewelry and for her debut she has chosen to wear her very favorite antique pin with its French illustration on porcelain. This pin was made in Czechoslovakia and is surrounded by a gold oval frame (that is most likely gold-filled), and ithas glittering citrine-colored stones as well. Suzette is alsowearing a pair of ornate drop earrings that look very Victorian and go perfectly with her brooch.
Suzette’s exact condition is as follows: we find three faint short hairlines to her bisque. Two are at the front rim, one is at the back, and all are hidden under her wig and are not obvious at all. We see a line emanating from her right eye to her ear but we do not think this is a hairline. When we light it, the plaster is behind it so it is difficult to tell. Her inner head rim has some verytiny chips but we believe that is the way she was made. She has some tiny wig pulls.Suzette has a tiny speck at the tip of her nose. Her body has flaking and some crackling to the original finish. Some of these areas are large, but of course these areas are covered by her pretty clothing. She has all of her finger and all of her toes. The only issues to her clothing are a couple of tiny holes to her bloomers and a little wear and a short tear to the underarm area of her slip. Her dress is in immaculate condition. Her brooch is missing one stone. Her stringing is perfect and she holds a pose beautifully.
We absolutely love this darling French bebe with her sweet and endearing expression. As we look at her we wonder how many little girl mommies she has been loved by and aboutall of the history she has known. If you have always wanted an authentic antiqueJumeau doll,we think Suzette would be a perfect opportunity for you to add an affordable yet stunning one to your collection!
Her stand is not included.
