Offered is a beautiful antique carved lava cameo brooch pendant. This Victorian piece was probably a Grand Tour souvenir mounted in very early 1900\'s. The subject is a Bacchante maenad, or possibly Ariadne herself- wife of the wine god Bacchus. She is carved in high relief and fine detail with grape vines in her hair. She is also fitted with a pearl necklace and earrings, lava habilles are quite rare. The setting is an ornate with decorations of leaves and flowers and Greek key. It has a locking clasp and a folding swivel bale for use as a pendant as well as a brooch, and is marked 14k BTW on the back. This actually appears to be green gold, I have not cleaned it but it has a greener hue than yellow. The color of the lava is an olive taupe. This piece is in very good antique condition- there appears to be a fleabite to the side of her nose, or else there by origin and was not polished down heavily. There is some lint on her neck in the photos, it is not a hairline. There is a slight scuff to the back. Neither of these minute imperfections deter, but are mentioned for accuracy. This piece measures a hair shy of 2\" long (not including the bale) by just over 1 1/2\" wide and 1/2\" thick. Lovely and unusual lava piece.
