A 5 1/8\" tall rectangular-shaped beautiful DEEP PURPLE colored antique HAIR TONIC bottle.This is a very early hand Blown Into Mold bottle (BIM) with a tooled top, dating it all the way back to the 1800\'s.

Condition: Bottle is in super nice condition. It has a few areas of wear or haze, BUT just from age, nothing significant. It has NO cracks, chips, dings, damage, etc. PLEASE see pictures for better idea of overall condition and ... check out the beautiful TRANSLUCENT PURPLE color!

The Noonan Company was a big supplier of barber shop supplies including hair tonic, hair styling, hair dressing, and various quack dandruff cure type products. From looking at the fancy design of this bottle, I would guess it was some type of hair dressing. The colored hair bottles are one of the most beautiful categories of antique bottles to collect as they come in a vast array of shapes and colors as this one testifies to. This purple colored one is no exception. The beautiful purple amethyst color of this glass is the result of the presence of manganese in the glass, a mineral that was pulverized and added to vats of liquid glass that acted as a decolorizing agent to turn the glass crystal clear. Exposure to ultraviolet rays of the sun or other sources of UV rays, triggers a chemical reaction and the manganese oxidizes and turns a wonderful amethyst color. Many of our amethyst bottles have been purpled from years of exposure to natural sunlight, others have been purpled with the use of strong UV lights in a box, and still others have been purpled by sterilizing them in an industrial food processor, a safe and permanent process which does the same thing as exposure to natural sunlight, except much faster. It is not irradiated, like the many other ‘purple’ bottles you see on that are kind of a pale, sick, washed-out purple color. This is just the richest and truest purple color that you’ve ever seen! Though some will suggest that this lavender color has been artificially produced or altered, the only thing that is artificial or altered is the time it took to turn purple. Whether a bottle has been purpled by the sun, by UV rays in a box, or by a sterilization process, they all turn the same purple color as it is all the same chemical reaction taking place. With few exceptions, only clear glass from before 1914 will turn sun-colored-amethyst. Not only does this deep purple/amethyst color make this a great looking bottle, but it also authenticates it as being truly antique.
