Description of the item:
Alexis Military SCHOOL BADGEBeautiful Imperial Russian Badge Alexis Military School. This badge measures approximately 43 mm from cross tip to cross tip and about 56 mm from top to bottom. The badge depicts a two-headed eagle upon a red enameled cross with crossed swords surmounted by an imperial crown. On the eagle’s chest is a letter "A", which was the monogram used by the Grand Duke Alexi Alexandrovich. At the bottom of the cross is a date of 1884. The reverse reveals a metal loop for attaching to a uniform, or for wearing as a necklace. The overall condition of the badge is excellent; very nearly mint condition. Amazing, when you consider it is over 150 year old. The last photo shows a current listing at an online millitaria store, selling for over $2,000, AND THE CROWN HAS BEEN BROKEN OFF OF THE TOP!
We have searched the internet several times over the years, and have only found this particular medal once before, other than the one current listing. It is extremely rare.
SOME INFORMATION ABOUT THE SCHOOL AND WHO IT WAS NAMED FOR:
ALEXIS MILITARY SCHOOL was named in honor of The Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich Romanov of Russia, who was born in Saint Petersburg on 14 January 1850 (4 January O.S.). He was the son of emperor Alexander II and empress Maria Alexandrovna. He was a younger brother of Grand Duchess Alexandra Alexandrovna, Tsarevich Nikolay Alexandrovich, Alexander III of Russia, Grand Duke Vladmir Alexandrovich. He was an older brother of Duchess Maria of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich and Grand Duke Paul Alexandrovich.
Sometimes (falsely) the academy is thought to be named after the Czarevich Alexei Nikolaevich, son of Czar Nicholas II, but he wasn't born until 1904.
