The Santa Maria de laInmaculada Concepción(Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception) was the largest of the threeships used by Christopher Columbus in his first voyage. Her master andowner was Juan de la Cosa.SantaMaria, the Flagship ofColumbus\' fleet, was a carrack, a type of merchant ship of between 400and 600 tons, perhaps 70 to 75 feet long, with a beam of about 25 feet, allowing it to carry more people and cargo. It had a deep draft of 6feet (1.8 m). The vessel had three masts: a mainmast, a foremast, and amizzenmast. Five sails altogether were attached to these masts. Eachmast carried one large sail. The foresail and mainsail were square; thesail on the mizzen was a triangular sail known as a lateen mizzen. Theship had a smaller topsail on the mainmast above the mainsail and onthe foremast above the foresail. In addition, the ship carried a smallsquare sail, a spritsail, on the bowsprit. The other shipsof the Columbus expedition were the smaller,caravel-type ships SantaClara, remembered as the Niña(\"The Girl\") and Pinta(\"The Painted\"). All these ships were second-hand (if not third-hand ormore) and were never meant for exploration, much less crossing theAtlantic Ocean!SantaMariawas the slowest of Columbus\'s vessels but performed well during theAtlantic crossing. She ran aground off the present-day site of CapHaitien, Haiti on December 25, 1492, and was lost. Realizing that hisship was beyond repair, Columbus ordered his men to strip thetimbers from the ship. The timbers from the ship were later used tobuild Môle Saint-Nicolas, which was originally called LaNavidad(Christmas) because the wreck occurred on Christmas Day.Although Columbus was not the first explorer to reach the Americas fromEurope (being preceded by the [link removed by ]led by Leif Ericson), his voyages molded the future of Europeancolonization and encouraged European exploration of foreign lands forcenturies to come. They led to general European awareness of theAmerican continents in the Western Hemisphere. With his four voyages ofexploration and several attempts at establishing a settlement on theisland of Hispaniola, all funded by Queen Isabella of Castile, heinitiated the process of Spanish colonization which foreshadowedgeneral European colonization of theNew World.Obverse
