Bernard Leach Studio Pottery St Ives Standard Ware Coffee Set Ash Glaze Tenmoku For Sale
Bernard Leach Studio Pottery St Ives Standard Ware Coffee Set Ash Glaze Tenmoku
A superb Leach Pottery Domestic Standard Ware Coffee set of lidded pot or jug, 6 conical cups, 6 saucers and an open sugar bowl in 'A' type glaze 'black to rust tenmoku' as cited in the catalogues from 1946until the death ofBernard Leach in 1979.
Allare different- as would be expected with hand thrown and decorated studio ware - but all have the most luscious glazing. Some are pure tenmokucolours of drippy deep dark brown - black with rich orange and metallic iron rims and body...some have an additional thick vitrious ash banding and bubble-peppered lines with a green hue. The more I touch, handle and photograph these, the more beautiful and detailed they become. They are - without exception - the most beautiful, yet simplistic, pieces of pottery I have ever had the pleasure to own; The sugar bowl being particularly exquisite in respect ofits textural and chromatic quality.
And my little camera is outstanding in its inability to capture this!
The lot is of 15 pieces and all are insuperb condition with the exception of the pot lid which has a under rim chip, a saucer with a minor fleabite, again underside, and a saucer with nibbling to the foot rim. For me, this can all be overlookedwhen I consider the4 fabulous finger mark voidsand an oil spot thumb print to the body of the teapot. These simply serve to make my mind race with intrigue and excitement; Were these made by thegreat Bernard Leach himself, or byDavid Leach, William Marshall, Harry Davisor perhaps by Kenneth Quick? It's quite delicious to think that one of these great potters may have had a hand on them :)
The Leach Pottery seal is apparent on the lower part of the pot, below the handle, and is visible on several of the cups. On others it is glaze covered. Impressed 'England' to several cups & saucer.
Low start price to generate interest but do please consider the intrinsic value of these items. Open to BIN offers too and I'm very friendly so do please just ask :)
