On offer here is an interesting replica inlay featuring Hazael, king of Damascus 842-800 B.C.E
Made of a limestone and quartzite composition stone this piece has an earthy, ochre colouration with traces of oxide. This piece can be displayed as a wall feature using the carefully drilled angled hole on the back and sliding the fragment onto a hook or nail. This has beenshown in one of the Photographs.
This piece is based on the actual carving found as part of a booty cache at a remote outpost known asArslan Tash in Syria.
Hazael was mentioned several times in the biblical old testament and contemporaneous Assyrian inscriptions. He ruled for 42 years as a powerful king of Aram with a variety of militarycampaigns against foes including Israel and Assyrian forces.
In this rare depiction he wears a long robe with fine tassle stitching on the hem. He stands in a typical pose of the era appearing full frontal except for the Egyptian style profile shown on sandled feet.
A woven plant motif creates a decorative border and Is a mild reference to fertility.
