Up for sale is a Rare Billy Pate Marlin Fly Reel. It is a RIGHT HAND wind, Anti-Reverse reel with a Gold finish. Serial #736 This reel was Hand Crafted in the USA, it is over 30 years old and although backing and fly line has been previously installed, it has NEVER been used.What I have is a beautiful gem of a reel, Tibor\'s first production run of Billy Pate Marlins. The reel is approx. 30 years old and in MINT condition.
Ted Juracsik, is the sole inventor and designer of the Billy Pate reels as well as all other Tibor reels. He was never officially partnered with Mr. Pate at anytime nor did Mr. Pate have input on the reel design. Ted Juracsik just made a better fly reel for him, and Mr. Pate decided he could sell them in his tackle store, World Wide Sportsman (which is now Bass Pro Shops). Since Mr. Pate was one of the most famous fly fishermen at the time, Ted Juracsik agreed to put his name on the reel for branding purposes.All Billy Pate Reels (even now), must be ordered from the factory with the correct retrieve - Left Hand or Right Hand. They cannot be converted by the customer. This reel is an Anti-Reverse Right Hand Retrieve model. This means when the reel spins while catching a fish, the handle on the spool stays in place. Lots of surgeons, musicians and other people that really work with their hands prefer this reel. Because this reel is so old, it is now a discontinued model, Tibor cannot convert the retrieve easily. They would essentially have to rebuild the reel with discontinued reels, Tibor just maintains and services under the warranty. There is not one scratch or finger print on this reel it is truly mint condition. This reel has a rich history. My hope is that this reel will be purchased by someone who will keep it as a display reel, such as Bass Pro Shop, Cabelas or L.L. Bean, because that is what it deserves, it is an antique now.
