Black Forest Beha Style Woodplate Antique Clock:
$51

This sale is for a late 19th century Black Forest Beha style wall clock with an interesting wood-plate movement. It is in nice overall condition and keeps good time, it does however come with one fault. The chime does not always agree with the actual hour shown by the hands and will need adjusting to correct this. The case shows no sign of active woodworm and I count less than a dozen holes in total. The convex face is in good condition, features roman numerals and I believe is made from enamel-painted zinc or copper rather than ceramic. The matching blue-steel hands are in reasonable condition and probably original. The two columns are alabaster with one having a tiny chip out of it at the top. The head-piece has been rather crudely hand painted compared to the inner portion and gives the appearance of a replacement. The back is original and bears some numbers and a date written in pencil, probably indicating the last time it was cleaned or serviced. Inside is a nice one-day wood-plate movement which keeps good time and appears to be original to the case. As mentioned earlier there is one snag with it, in that once set correctly the chime will work fine for a few hours but eventually it will miss out the half-hour chime and then run out of tune with the clock. One unique feature of this particular movement is the brass escapement wheel adjuster which is shaped like a running rabbit or hare- clearly the maker just having fun. Finally, although I suspect they may not belong to this clock, the replacement weights and pendulum do not detract from the overall attractive appearance.

If anyone can supply further information about this clock I would be happy to add it to the listing. Please ask if you need more information or photos.

As always, there is and no buy-it-now. The item will go to the highest buyer.

I have been informed that the running rabbit or hare is the trademark of Philip Haas & Söhne (Son). This company first started trading in St. Georgen, Black Forest, Germany in 1867and survived until 1920. The hare symbol was first registered in 1883.

The clock measures 14x9x5 British inches or 35x23x13 european centimeters.
