Black Negro Blackamoor Slave Rare Silkwork Needlework 18thc 19thc Exotic Antique For Sale
Black Negro Blackamoor Slave Rare Silkwork Late 18thC early 19thC Exotic Antiquevery unusual work, good colouring loss of backing c1800 This is an absolutely beautiful, mysterious, exotic antique hand made silk and paintwork embroidery. Based on the design, the subject, and the feel of the materials, in relation to my experience studying textiles, this would be either a very late 18th century work or very early 19th century piece around the year 1800. The piece is the most unusual that I have come across to date. I have never seen myself any silk or wool or embroidery featuring a black Servant or Attendant. Of course nowadays common sense would dictate equality of all personsirrespectiveof colour or creed, but it is a very interesting historical theme. The little black figure is hidden behind the right hand shoulder of the Lady, there is also another Attendant behind leading a group of camels. The Lady is accompanied by an elegant looking Gentleman. In the background there appears a palace or castle. There are also some charming depictions of little animals including deer, butterflies, rabbits and what looks to be a kangaroo. Such exoticism is a very uncommon subject matter!! Antique textiles are particularly special due to their fragility and the social history or 'herstory' that is behind them. In all likelihood this piece would have been created by a young lady as an accomplishment and 'sensible' recreational activity to keep her focused on 'ladylike' pursuits. It is in fair to good condition for its age. Their is some good colouring and for the most part the main design is very well preserved. I would draw your attention to the outlines of the silk where the pieces have either been re-mounted or partly restored/ removed from their background a long time ago. It is very much a rescued piece which requires some attention and care. It comes with what appears to be its original quality wood frame, although it could be a historical replacement - there may be marks to the frame orminuteknocks and scratches but no actual breakages to the glass. The picture is loose in the frame and will require re-backing, but I thought it better to sell it with the original frame so it is up to the buyer if they would like to have it restored.I
have included many photographs to give you a detailed impression of
the pieces quality and condition - these act as part of the
description so please look carefully at them. It is up to you, the
potential buyer to ask a question if you would like further
descriptions of specific parts. Please note all the items that we
sell are vintage or antique so will have a certain amount of wear. Should this not sell, for a price close to where I feel it should be, I will be having it restored after Christmas. It measures approximately 15 inches by 21.5.Whilst I feel that I have set a fair price, offers are more than welcome as I would love for it to find a nice new home.
Questions are more than welcome. Please take a look at my sellers page to find out more information about me and the service I provide as well as my excellent record of response.
