Book From Ransacked Rebel Home W/handwritten 1862 Nathan Martin Baker Narrative For Sale
PLEASE SEE ALL PHOTOS BELOW.
I have listed this week many historical items from the family of the Reverend Nathan Martin Baker (1837-1922). Rev. Baker was a Cumberland Presbyterian minsiter in the Decatur, Illinois area. He was also chaplain of the 116th Illinois Regiment during the Civil War, seeing action in the western theater (Chickasaw Bayou, Arkansas Post, Vicksburg, Missionary Ridge and elsewhere). Rev. Baker was the son of William Davis Baker and Marilla Martin Baker.
Regarding the books I have listed, many are the actual books mentioned in Clara Martin Baker's wonderful 1939 article entitled "Books In A Pioneer Household". This work is available on the web in reprint and electronic form. Clara was the youngest daughter of Nathan Martin Baker.

Description/Comments
The value in this book is the signed handwritten narrative on the front endpaper. This book was rescued from the Union ransacking of the vacant home of Confederate soldier Sgt. James J. Quarles, 30th Mississippi. Mr. Quarles signature appears three times in the book. I believe he died at the Battle of Atlanta.
