Brass & Wood Bookends folding Book Shelf early Brass Pierced Hardware c1850s
A beautiful solid hardwood folding bracket shelf that opens to form a free standing bookshelf. The ends feature wonderful, early pierced brass plates with hand chased engraving as shown, fixed with roundel like rivets that add a ye olde feel. Indeed this style of decoration generally is a very old technique and a popular style from the Mid Victorian era perhaps ca 1840-60.
The shelves feature a subtle two tone use of timbers with a finely made boxed construction, not obvious until looked at more closely. The hinges are brass and original- and the shelves do seem to sag outwards a little but are essentially in excellent shape as is the whole item. A beautiful piece and possibly Australian Colonial made?
