fateful voyage. Enduring public interest in this event makes it a superb
acquisition and investment for collectors of silver coins, historical coins or
anyone looking for a tasteful memento of the maritime legend. This very limited editionis the
only official British Sterling Silver coin issued to mark the Titanic
centenary. There will be no subsequent editions or releases. The Royal
Mint Ltd is 100% owned by Her Majesty’s Treasury
and this commemorative coin is legal tender but will
not be issued into circulation.
On 10 April 1912
the British ship RMS Titanic, the largest passenger steamship in the world, set
sail from Southampton bound for New
York. Tragically, after just four days, the luxury
liner hit the infamous iceberg and sank, causing 1,517 souls to perish.
Interest in the event and the stories of the passengers has never waned; a
century later, this magnificent ship still enthralls us and stirs our emotions.
The reverse of the £5 Silver Proof coin has been
designed by Royal Mint engraver Lee Robert Jones and features a stunningly
accurate depiction of the magnificent vessel as she sails from Southampton. Behind Titanic is the silhouette of ‘Thane’ looking down at the world-famous profile of the ship
sailing through the Atlantic Ocean. The
‘Thane’ is the memorial statue carved by Sir Thomas Brock which was erected in Belfast, Northern
Ireland, the birthplace of the Titanic, in
1920 and depicts the goddess of death. The
contrast of the proud ship sailing out to sea and the ghostly figure suggesting
the fate that awaits dramatically captures the essence of the story. Mr. Jones is quoted: "My design is concerned with the
spectacle for the ship and her story. Thane, the goddess of death, is to
reflect the significance of the event - she symbolises respect and sorrow for
the loss that occurred."
The obverse shows the timeless portrait of The
Queen by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS and indicates that the coin is issued under the
authority of Alderney - the most northern of the
British Channel Islands, a British Crown dependency,
and 60 miles (97 km) from the south coast of England.
As befits such an important coin, the Titanic Silver Proof Coin is supplied
in an elegant black presentation case. A Certificate of Authenticity is
included to guarantee the provenance and precious metal content of this elegant
commemorative coin, a superb collectable legacy piece.
Dr Kevin Clancy, director of the Royal Mint
Museum, proudly commented
of the coin – “100 years has not lessened
the interest in the tragic outcome of her maiden voyage, the personal stories
of those on board or the achievement of the iconic ship as a feat of British
engineering. The Royal Mint's coin will mark this occasion and, we hope, will
be passed on to future generations to honour the lives that were lost,
underlining the significance of RMS Titanic in British history."

The British five pound coin
(£5) is a redenominated commemorative coin, by tradition a continuation of the
former crown,
being identical with it in size and weight. The £5 coin has the same dimensions
as the crown, having a mass of 28.28 grams and having a diameter of 38.61 millimeters
(1.52 inches). The
USA
uses the avoirdupois ounce for everyday weighing. There are 16 avoirdupois
ounces in a pound, so 1 avoirdupois ounce = 28.35 grams. A Troy
ounce is equivalent to about 31.1 grams.
The Royal Mint is the only body permitted
to manufacture, or mint, coins
in the United Kingdom.
The Mint originated over 1,100 years ago, and has an exclusive contract with Her
Majesty’s Treasury to supply all coinage for the UK. The Royal
Mint Ltd is 100% owned by Her Majesty’s Treasury.
Unlike other coins, proof coins arestruck two or more times by the coin die. By striking it more than
once the metal is forced into all the crevices of the die, thereby giving a very
fine detail to the image on the coin. Also, by treating the die in a special way, the coins it produces have a different
appearance. Modern technology allows the high points on the coin design to be
acid treated (on the die). The background design of the coin die is
polished, resulting in a mirror-like look on the coin it strikes. This gives the
finished coin a frosted look on the raised parts of the design, with a
mirror like finish on the background. The fine detail and appearance of this heirloom proof coin is breathtaking.
