Emmet's death mask was cast on the evening of his execution by James Petrie.James Petrie, a brave man in this time of terror and the only one of Emmet's
friends
with the courage to go to Kilmainham Jail, where the body was left overnight. If it were not for him, this would not be offered here today.
When no one claimed the body, it was buried in an unmarked grave, which has
never been traced. Extremely rare memento of the young leader who’s unsuccessful Rising won him a special
place in the hearts of his fellow countrymen and women.22 x 19cms Rare Irish Stuff on Robert Emmet
Nothing strikes fear and terror into the heart of man than the prospect of
being
hanged, drawn and quartered.
This barbaric sentence was handed down to Robert Emmet by a civilised state
as he stood in the dock convicted of treason.
He knew too well the gruesome fate, which awaited him,
yet he never flinched.
Holding his composure and being an accomplished orator he delivered his
speech from the dock, the likes of which has not been heard before or since.
He held the court in a mighty verbal grip and finally folding his arms he
concluded with these words:
"When my country takes her place among the nations of the earth,
then,
and not till then,
let my epitaph be written.
I have done".
The following day when Young Robert accepted his savage execution he was the
last man to be put to death in this way.
The practice of being hung, drawn and quartered was henceforth abolished.
His noble character and his famous Speech from the Dock will never be forgotten.
