UP FOR PURCHASEA small edition of the 19th century bronze \"The Dice Player\" marked Henry Paul Hudelet. The original was the largest, 23\" tall, exhibited at the Paris salon in 1876. Several mid-sized editions were cast, 15\" tall, the sales records for which can be seen online with diligent searching. The smaller edition for sale in this sale (6 inches tall) is more obscure in history.This 6 inch version of The Dice Player is obviously 19th century, beautifully cast in bronze, and set atop buttery marble. Once gilt, much of the gold has worn away with the years. The feet of the base are slightly taller at the front, allowing the standing viewer an improved perspective.The only flaw is a small crack in the marble base radiating from one of the feet. Nothing here is loose or threatens separation.This item will be shipped insured, and requiring they buyer to sign for the delivery. The seller welcomes questions.Born in Langres in 1849, Henry Paul Hudelet (1849-1878) entered the drawing school of the city in 1864 and continued his education at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1866, where he received lessons from sculptor Augustin Dumont (1801-1884). Hudelet presented in the contest of Fine Arts in 1867 a Mercury and an academy in the round after the antique, and two other works Achilles and Bacchante playing with a panther in the contest of 1869. Hudelet exhibited at the Salon of French Artists from 1876 and 1877. That same year he competed for the Grand Prix de Rome with a bas-relief depicting Fishermen finding the head of Orpheus on the banks of the Ebro, molded at the expense of the State (now in the of museum Art and History of Langres) and the statue Player dice. This very talented artist died prematurely when he was once again compete.
