Burton The Anatomy Of Melancholy 1652 Engraved Title Complete Psychology Folionr:
$962

OFFERED WITH is A VERY APPEALING EXAMPLE OF ONE OF THE MASTERWORKS OF ENGLISH PROSE, ROBERT BURTON’S “THE ANATOMY OF MELANCHOLY,” PRINTED AT LONDON IN FOLIO IN 1652, containing the definitive text and incorporating the author’s final revisions, THEREFORE TO BE CONSIDERED AS THE DEFINITIVE EDITION, complete in all respects, including the half-title and the poem explaining the engraved title (and quite scarce thus), adorned with the famous engraved title, and FINELY BOUND IN FULL EARLY-18TH CENTURY ENGLISH REVERSED CALF. The volume may be referenced as Wing B6182

A HIGHLY DESIRABLE EXAMPLE OF THE 1652 EDITION OF BURTON’S “THE ANATOMY OF MELANCHOLY,” THE DEFINITIVE SIXTH EDITION, SIGNIFICANTLY REVISED BY THE AUTHOR, OF ONE OF THE MOST GLORIOUS BOOKS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE, AND, ACCORDING TO BOSWELL, THE ONLY BOOK THAT EVER TOOK SAMUEL JOHNSON OUT OF BED TWO HOURS EARLIER THAN HE WISHED TO RISE.

The full title reads as follows:

“The Anatomy of Melancholy. / What it is. With all the kinds, causes, symptomes, prognosticks, and severall cures of it. / In three Partitions with their severall Sections, members & subsections. / Philosophically, Medicinally, Historically, opened & cut up. / By / Democritus Junior. / With a Satirycall Preface conducing to the following Discourse. / The Sixt Edition, corrected and augmented by the Author. / Omne fulit frunctum qui miscuit utile dulci. / London / Printed & are to be Sold by Hen: Crips & Lodo: Lloyd at their Shop in Popes head alley / 1652.”

This is amongst the most glorious works in the English language, a foundation of all psychological thought that followed, but also an unmatchable compendium of the learning, wisdom and wit of the age. It is also important to note that Burton laboured almost as much on the second through fifth editions as on the first, augmenting and revising each subsequent edition considerably. This edition incorporates Burton’s final revisions, and therefore incorporates the definitive text. The present volume also includes one of the finest examples of the famous engraved title that one could hope for, displaying the author’s portrait, as well as 9 allegorical illustrations of the manifestations of melancholy. Finally, the opening leaf comprising the half-title and the poem explaining the frontispiece is present in this example and quite scarce thus; this leaf is very frequently lacking. According to Boswell, Samuel Johnson called this “the only book that ever took him out of bed two hours earlier than he wished to rise.”

The full title reads as follows:

“The Anatomy of Melancholy: / What it is. / With all the Kindes, Causes, Symptomes, Prognosticks, and Severall Cures of it. / In Three Main Partitions, With their Several Sections, Members and Subsections. / Philosophically, Medicinally, Historically, opened and cut up. / By Democritus Junior. / With a Satirycall Preface, conducing to the following Discourse. / ”

The volume is complete in all respects. It is paginated [10], 78, [6], 97, 96-140, [4], 141-217, p. 454, [4], p. 216, 220-574 p., 575-577 leaves, [1], 578-723, [11]. The volume measures  cm by  cm by cm; each leaf measures about  mm by  mm.

The volume is in very good to excellent condition internally, with generally clean pages, clear print and ample margins throughout. The engraved title is a very good to excellent impressions, with some slight weakness of the impression at the foot of the page, as in most copies of this edition. The first few leaves are also a little dampstained at the lower and upper margins. The half-title and argument of the frontispiece are present in this volume, which is itself a rarity. The upper-outer corner of the ‘argument’ leaf has been excised, probably to remove a previous owner’s signature. The final leaves are more heavily dampstained at the margins, encroaching a little into the text. There is mild toning of a few leaves, but this remains generally quite an appealing example.

The appealing binding is of 18th century reversed calf, rebacked very expertly to style with reversed calf in the 20th century. The binding is in very good to excellent condition, with strong hinges and a strong book-block. It shows only very minor scuffing of the boards and minor wear at the corners and edges. The leather upon the hinges is cracked, as one would expect, but the hinges themselves hold strongly by the cords.

Finally, no description of “The Anatomy of Melancholy” is complete without a good sampling of the wealth of quotations concerning it from famous personages:

Thus Anthony Wood (Atheniae Oxoniensis):

“[Burton] was an exact mathematician, a curious calculator of nativities, a general read scholar, a thoro'-paced philologist, and one that understood the surveying of lands as well. As he was by many accounted a severe student, a devourer of authors, a melancholy and humorous person; so by others, who knew him well, a person of great honesty, plain dealing and charity. I have heard some of the ancients of [Christ Church] say that his company was very merry, facete and juvenile, and no man in his time did surpass him for his ready and dexterous interlarding his common discourses among them with verses from the poets or sentences from classical authors. Which being then all the fashion in the university, made his company more acceptable.”

And Lord Byron:

“The book . . . most useful to a man who wishes to acquire the reputation of being well read, with the least trouble, is Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy, the most amusing and instructive medley of quotations and classical anecdotes I ever perused.”

And Bradford:

“Milton showed his admiration, as usual, by imitation. Sterne conveyed passage after passage almost bodily into Tristram Shandy”

And, most amusingly, Thomas Hearne:

“The Earl of Southampton went into a shop and inquired of the bookseller for Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy. Mr. Burton sate in a corner of the shop at that time. Says the bookseller, 'My Lord, if you please, I can shew you the author.' He did so. 'Mr. Burton,' says the earl, 'your servant.' 'Mr. Southampton,' says Mr. Burton, 'your servant,' and away he went.”

In all, A VERY APPEALING EXAMPLE OF ONE OF THE MASTERWORKS OF ENGLISH PROSE, ROBERT BURTON’S “THE ANATOMY OF MELANCHOLY,” PRINTED AT LONDON IN FOLIO IN 1652, containing the definitive text and incorporating the author’s final revisions, THEREFORE TO BE CONSIDERED AS THE DEFINITIVE EDITION, complete in all respects, including the half-title and the poem explaining the engraved title (and quite scarce thus), adorned with the famous engraved title, FINELY BOUND IN FULL EARLY-18TH CENTURY ENGLISH REVERSED CALF, and OFFERED WITH .
