I'm listing an outstanding assortment of museum quality musical, electrical and mechanical
antiques, and I suspect that there will be at least something of
interest to almost everyone.You're looking at a complete, working 1880 Horton's Autophone. This compact and very collectible organette stands upright on a table and features a hand-pumped bellows that works like the shutter assembly on an old motion picture projector. As the organette's operator presses on the bellows, a sprocket engages with holes on the side of the flat paper music strip and advances the strip across the reeds (there are 14 notes). In addition to the holes that guide the strip through the apparatus, there's a second set of holes that introduce sustain as the strip is played. (An ingenious device, and a primitive one too.) Condition is excellent throughout, as you can see in the photographs. Everything on the Autophone appears to be original, including the decorative paper covering the bellows and the finish on the wood. Two round spots of finish wear are evident on the back side (see photographs), but the finish is otherwise in excellent condition, and the varnish has a warm glow similar to that seen on a well-maintained antique violin. The apparatus is in working condition, but it requires a bit of luck and a bit of skill to play it properly. It also requires music strips that are in reasonably good condition. I'll include three dozen different music strips with the organette, and most of them are still in good shape. Others strips can be purchased from vendors on or from Schmidt's Music rolls in Easton, Maryland.The organette measures 9" x 5" the base and stands 11" high. That's about it. I'll pack everything carefully and get it to you safely. I've been shipping antique phonographs and early radios for years, and I can assure you that I know how to pack and prep properly.On Feb-19-13 at 08:32:19 PST, seller added the following information:
