C1890 FRENCH FIGURAL BRONZE PATINA SPELTER YOUNG MAN W/ SWORD BY HENRI PLE NoRES Description
This listing is for a fine circa 1890 French bronze patina, spelter figure of a young man defending his home. The piece measures 30 ¼ inches or 77 cm high, and is 13 ¼ inches or 33 cm at its widest.
The spelter figure shows a young man standing with a large sword in his hand. He wears a fur tunic and a belt with a lion’s head, and between his legs is a plow leaning against an anvil. The white metal figure a rich brown patina or color. He stands on a stepped round base with a plaque at the front. The plaque reads “LA DEFENSE DU FOYER PAR H. PLE (MEDAILLE D’OR), which roughly translates to The Defense of the Home. It is signed on the base “HENRI PLE”, this for Henri Honore Ple (1853-1922), who was a Paris based artist and studied with Mathurin Moreau and exhibited figures and projects at the Salon in 1877. He also received a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1900. Please reference "The Disctionary of Sculptors in Bronze" by James Mckay page 300.
