This listing is for a circa 1890 Japanese Meiji Period (1868-1912) hand painted silk fan in a carved wood shadow box frame and protected by glass. The frame measures 19.5 by 31 inches or 49.5 by 78.7 cm. The fan is white silk and hand painted with sparrow birds flying above white cherry blossom flowers and in the distance a bench waiting to be sat on. The frame of the fan is Hornbeam wood and further enhanced with gold highlights. It was identified on the back as Hornbeam wood. The frame is hand carved teak wood and has dark brown patina or color.The fan is in excellent condition, the wood frame has some minor flakes and wear to the patina.
