C1895 Heavy 800 Silver German French Style Covered Stemed Compote Centerbowl Nor For Sale

This listing is for a large, circa 1895, German 800 silver covered and stemed center bowl compote done in the French Louis XIV style. It measures just under 10 inches or 25 cm high and is 8 1/2 inches or 21 cm in diameter. It is quite heavy and weighs in at over 30 troy ounces. (I am unable to give you the exact weight as my scale only weighs up to 30 troy ounces).The silver has been tested and is all 800 grade silver.

The center of the bowl are both done in high raised bas relief work. The body of the compote is open lattice work with cartouches. Two of these cartouches show "farmers" enjoying country life. This was a very French inspired motif. In the Louis XVI period, French Royalty, often dressed as country folk farmers, at the balls given by Marie Antoinette. Their farm clothes being very elaborate, which is the case here. The cover is also in lattice work but here the work is solid. It has two cartouches of a lady reading and being serenaded by a mandolin player. The top of the cover has a dolphin finial. Although German it is very French in feeling. .

The center of the bowl has three hallmarks. The first is a letter and hard to make out. The second is a crowned "G.R." and is the makers mark and stamp of Georg Roth a German silversmith working in Hanau Germany from 1891 to 1919. The last hallmark is "GERMANY".
