C1925 Large Chelsea Yacht Wheel Ship Clock Mahogany Mounted Perfectly Working For Sale
C1925 LARGE CHELSEA YACHT WHEEL SHIP CLOCK MAHOGANY MOUNTED PERFECTLY WORKING
Thislisting is for a rather scarce large Chelsea ships clock. It measures 17 1/2 inches or 45 cm high. The clock itself is surrounded with a large ships wheel. The wheel is 14 1/2 inches or 37 cm in diameter.
The clock itself is an 8 day time and ships bell clock. That means the clock will run for approximately eight days on a full winding. This clock, rather then chiming the hours like a civilian clock would, chimes a four hour ships watch. Merchant seaman stood watch typically for 4 hours thus allowing the ship to be run 24 hours a day. instead there are 8 bells, one for each hour of the four hour watch. (in the age of sailing ships the 30 minutes were timed with a 30 minute hour glass and then the ships bosun would hit a bell from 1 to 8 times so the sailors would know how much time they had on their watch).
This clock is in perfect working condition, keeps accurate time and counts the ships hours correctly. The watch face and glass are in immaculate condition. The case has weathered with the bronze and brass oxidizing in a most pleasing way. The finish is untouched. I know there is a serial number inside the clock, but there has never been a screwdriver to any of the screws, so I am not going to take the movement out, it is just to beautifully original as it is. The mahogany is in excellent condition.
This clock is a time capsule of the period. It comes with it's original Chelsea key. Really a nice thing.
