CA Buena Park Laurel and Hardy Movieland Wax Museum Perfect Day chrome advertLaurel and Hardy in "Perfect Day" at the Movieland Wax Museum, Buena Park, California"The quality of humor that Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy generated in their pictures is ageless. One understands their resigned frustration as in "Perfect Day" (1929) they perch on the old Model T's running board – its radiator spouting steam – after having demolished the box office of the Bijou Theatre...entirely by unpremeditated accident, mind you !"A Chrome Era c.1960s postcard ©1967 Geo. FEATURING

Wax Museums

The creation of Wax Museums goes back to Madame Marie Tussaud’s traveling exhibitions of wax sculptures in late 18th century Europe, eventually settling in London. Over the years the popularity of these lifelike exhibits of historical political leaders, entertainers and villains has waned and waxed in various locations.

In the 1950s and 60s, wax museums enjoyed a surge of popularity as they became associated with the other great fads of the era, namely 3-D and grade-B horror films. In 1953, House of Wax starring the delightfully macabre horror superstar Vincent Price became the first 3-D blockbuster, earning nearly $24 million following an investment of just $1 million. Even though recreations of historic crimes had always been a popular feature of wax museums, the plot of House of Wax appealed to people’s most horrific fantasy about this art form – that their lifelike realism is itself achieved by somehow recycling the dead.
