GOLD QUARTZfrom the MOTHER LODE
Ruler is 1/4\" wide (6 mm). U.S. 10 cent coin is 17 mm in diameter.Specimen weight: 1.3Gram - 20.1 Grains Size:13.9X13.1X9.3mmIf you\'ve an eye for gold straight from the earth, check out this glistening chunk from theSierra Nevada Mtns. If you\'ve hunted for gold, you realize it\'s not a small specimen. The gold seen here is so clean and bright, you might think acid had been used, but that is definitely not the case. The leaves and other golden forms are completely natural. High-power magnification will reveal some astounding qualities within nooks and crannies hidden to the naked eye. The attached quartz is slightly transparent and shows minor iron oxidation staining. I know you\'ll love the delicate and colorful nature of this natural beauty.Back in my mining days, nuggets would sometimes show up with host rock attached. This gangue was usually smoky quartz, but occasionally it might be rhyolite or a limy, carbonaceous, agglomerate mineral. These non-metallic substances were sometimes concretionary coatings or caliche, but at other times, a more studied analysis of the marraige between precious metal and rock revealed lode deposit ramifications. Because it\'s now well-documented that massive gold deposits found in Nevada originated as a result of percolating waters from hydrothermal hot springs, I have little doubt many desert gold deposits discovered in Arizona are geo-thermal in nature as well. Because of the enormous cost and difficulty in developing a lode deposit, Ipreferred leaving lodes to the hard-rock miners. The thing with discontinuous fissure veins is that ore tenor is rarely consistent in it\'s richness. Assays, if you decide to commission such lab-work, are expensive as well, and it is only through the careful compilation of these ore samples combined with qualitative/quantitative analysis that a body of ore can be proven or ruled out. In pocket country however, whenever a potential source of erodingplacer gold is found in the form of an attractive vein system, it\'s advisable to take samples for home assay or for more professional testing. It might also behoove you to detect the heck out of that area. You might get lucky and discover a pocket or lens on a quartz vein which is still shedding-gold. Generally-speaking, placer was my focus, and no matter how disfigured, discolored, deformed, or impure a nugget might be, I never found a piece of gold I didn\'t like. It takes a lot of effort to find gold whether it\'s placer or a pocket, so there\'s really no such thing as an \'ugly nugget\'. Each one is beautiful in it\'s own way. I guarantee the goldgrowths here are a natural occurrence. Allmy specimensshow visible gold and areauthenticgold quartz specimens. I don\'t paste\'pounded gold\' or spray gold-colored paintonbarren rock. Refractory ores, whichneed to beheated and run through special processes to release theminute amount of gold locked up inside, aren\'t usually my thing. When I do sell sulphides, you\'ll be able to see gold associated with the pyrites. You won\'t need tocrush and treatmy rocks withcyanide solution to get at the gold. We\'re not dealing in micron gold. Ideal in genuine high-grade,naturally-occurring gold quartz with visible gold, both as specimen and as jewelry-gradeslab.Such rich rocks and lapidary rougharehard to findandexpensive to obtain.

Well, we know by now that most of the time, the best \'free gold\' will be found at or near bedrock; yet, in the lower forty eight states, you will seldom find layers of gold-bearing gravel at bedrock uniformly rich in grade. It undoubtedly will take lots of excavation and/or trenching, churn drilling, et al to find out where the best, richest ground is hiding. This may not always be the case, but you can ofttimes count on the largest boulder packs, beginning at the apex of an inside bend and extending just downstream, to hold the better pay-streaks. In straighter stretches of a river, when you are in-between bends, or in fragmented sections of suspended Tertiary channel, undulating and/or projections of upthrust bedrock hold the key to the location of pay-streaks. These ancient river channels now stranded high above present daywater tables have historically been some of the most productive placers ever mined. Prior to the invention of modern-day, mechanized dirt-movers, rat-hole mining was an oft-used method years before giant \'cats\', front-end-loaders, and back-hoes lumbered onto the scene. While primitive and simple, a great many man-hours of brute-hard labor was required to \'rat-hole\' i.e. sink a shaft to bedrock (by hand methods), then tunnel out laterally in hopes of encountering pay-streaks which might then be chased until rich leads disappeared or \'played-out\'.
If you\'re mining on public lands, filing a notice of intent to operate or a plan of operations detailing the manner in which you intend to mine will undoubtedly be a requirement. Naturally, many small-scale miners try to avoid these bureaucratic obstructions to one\'s progress. Give this matter serious consideration for there\'s a good chance serious penalties will be levied against those who refuse to follow the rules (and get caught). Once the necessary paperwork has been filed, authorization issued, and you\'re good to go,developthe area you plan on prospecting/mining carefully with the knowledge that eventually you will need to reclaim the area you have excavated.

Thanks forchecking out our digs.
