CASED ENGLISH STERLING CUP –“LEAPLING” (Leap Year Baby) 1924
Rare Presentation Date of 29 February 1924-1 3/4 oz- Fitted Case
Offered in this sale is Cased English Sterling Silver Presentation Cup with a highly unusual “Leapling” or Leap Year Baby presentation date of 29 February 1924. Leap Year Babies are those born on the 29th day of February, a day that only occurs once every 4 years. The Cup features the Classic Georgian baluster shape, with a flowing “S” curve handle and sits well on a spread foot. It comes with its original fitted case, executed in black leatherette with gold tooling.
A very Decorative and unusual piece.
SIZE & CONDITION: The Cup is just over 3” (8 cm) high at the highest point, 3 1/2” (8.5 cm) in diameter including the handle and weighs 1 3/4 oz (49.6 g). The Foot is not weighted.
The Cup is in good used condition with some very minor dings (worst shown in photos), and sits well. It bears a 1924 presentation inscription as shown in the photos.
MARKS: The Cup is fully marked with STERLING SILVER Birmingham Hallmarks as follows:
Makers Mark – “S LD” in an oval cartouche
City Mark – Anchor (for Birmingham)
Lion Passant – Sterling Standard Mark
Date Letter- “B” for 1926
