Charles Eames Creative Playthings Giant House Of Cards 1970's Herman Miller For Sale
creative playthings / otto maier verlag / ravensburg charles eames “giant house of cards” most likely produced in 1973 (based on the index number on the box - Q973 - which is probably a printer code). 32 cards, thicker board than playing cards. each card is 4.5” x 7”. box is 8” x 10”. while the box says these are “GIANT” house of cards, they are SMALLER than the 1950’s giant house of cards manufactured by tigrett in the 1950’s, and are in truth a “MEDIUM” house of cards. condition in detail - i’m being conservative, they look better than they sound: CARDS: 12 cards have no problems at all. 15 have very light surface creasing at one of the “flaps” or slots from taking them apart - mainly visible in bright light and at an angle. the remaining 4 cards have more issues (see images). the black card with white dots, has a crease in one of the flaps, not major, but visible. the white card with blue dots has a crease, which is difficult to see unless under a lamp but it is a long crease. the kachina doll card, has a bend to one of the flaps that has torn the surface in the white area, and there is a bit of image scraped off (the size of a pill bug). lastly, the card with matches, has some light creasing, and someone has written an X on each corner of the card with a red felt tip pen. BOX: the bottom of the box has one corner split and a tear. the top has some wear and a crease in the top. one corner is split and it also has some age and wear. charles eames was one of the main designers at the herman miller company during the tenure of designer george nelson. the eames house of cards, were originally designed for the tigrett company in the mid 1950's. in the 60's and 70's various re-publications of the cards were released by companies in the usa and europe.
see my sales in the coming weeks with more modern design ephemera, i will be listing a very rare early harry bertoia painting and some rare books such as a bauhaus book signed by walter gropius, an eames plywood radio, etc.
