Rare Early edition. 8vo. 9" x 7" inches (LxB). Pp. vii, [12ff], 255, [18, ff] leaves, single sided pagination with some half-page woodcuts in text. Fine original contemporary full vellum binding with yapp fore-edges. The most popular and influential books on the subject in the 16th and 17th centuries. Essentially a rural encyclopedia, covering topics from growing crops, tending gardens, caring for animals, distillation, wine-making, hunting and fishing, L'agriculture is a revised and augmented translation into French by Estienne himself of his Praedium rusticum, first published at the Estienne press in 1554. The French edition (1564) was edited by Estienne's son-in-law Liebault, who further expanded the work; his 'detailed account of tobacco as a medicinal plant [is] the earliest on this subject' (Mortimer). Each subsequent edition contained additional woodcut illustrations. After Charles Etienne's death, this work attained extraordinary popularity. Some thirty editions were published between 1591 and 1702. A classic work. CONDITION REPORT: A rare book in a fine original contemporary full calf leather boards, gilt decorated spine sympathetically rebacked in antique style, using matching brown calf leather with 6 raised bands, red & black gilt lettered morocco label (See Scans below), some wear/tear, scuffing to covers, spine, ends & corners (See Scans below), pages-plates with some age toning, are clean & bright (See Scans below), the binding is tight & intact (See Scans below). The leather is smooth & supple to the touch (See Scans below). Note: Lacks 2 leaves, page numbers 85 & 161, many other pages misnumbered, but all there.
