Chinese Oriental Silver Enamel 2 Compartment Snuff Or Stamp Box Enameled:
CHINESE ORIENTAL SILVER ENAMEL 2 COMPARTMENT SNUFF OR STAMP BOX ENAMELED
This is an interesting and attractive little silver box, which I will admit I am guessing is Chinese in origin. The bottom of the box is marked but I am not knowledgeable enough to even know which direction the markings should read, hence the two pictures of the marks.
The overall shape of the box I would liken to a beetle or scarab. The top shows a moth with wings spread along with 5 silver ribs and a floral cartouche. In the interior of the box is divided in two compartments on the length of the box. The outside edge of the box is encircled with two bands of green enamel over a guilloche like decoration
I am unsure of the actual silver content of the box, perhaps the markings on the bottom determine that, but I believe it to be sterling or close to it. The box appears to me to be totally handmade and the elaborate top of the box hand chased and in the repousse technique of silverwork, showing amazing skill. The enamel decoration is very colorful in various shades of green and blue, along with some yellow and purple.
Quite a beautiful and attractive little box!
If anyone out there is knowledgeable about the origin, markings or age of this box I would appreciate any more information you might be willing to share.

Age and Condition
I am estimating the box at circa 1900 to early 20th century.
Please look closely at the photos as they are an important part of my description of this item. In looking over the box I see no obvious damage to the silver. There is some loss to the enamel, most noticeably on the green enamel bands encircling the box, and the lid is slightly sprung (less than 1/16” – 0.2 cm) on one side only. These issues can be clearly seen in the photos.
Please note: if you see a dark spot in the photos it is from my camera and is not a mark on the piece. It will be either just to the right of center towards the bottom or slightly above center on the right side of the photo.
The box is about 2.25” (5.7 cm) long, about 1.75” wide (4.4 cm) and about 1” (2.5 cm) tall.
The box weighs about 1ounce (28 grams).
