Circa 1591 Rare Antique The True History Of The Civil Wars With France Henry 4th:
Up for sale is a rare Renaissance era volume on the civil war in France with the title of :The True History of the civil wars of France , Between the French and King Henry the 4th & the leagures
Gathred from the year of our lord 1585until the present October 1591.
By Anthony Colynet , Printed in London for Thomas Woodcock , dwelling in Paules Chrchyard . at the figure of the black beare.I have looked on Antique book sites, and University collections , I came across this title listed on a UK bookseller website that sold in 2012, but that was it.
I believe this book is fairly hard to find in any condition.
The book is written in Old English Black letter type with spelling for instance "Ciuill VVarres" .
At times the script is hard to figure out , after enough practice it's possible to decipher the writing. There is a 3 page introduction page written in Latin this is followed by a piece titled
"To The Christian Reader "
"I have written this Historie informe ofAnnles reducing the actions of every year into a sundrei bookes "
the remaining text of the 9 books in Old English .
At times the writing reads like an early propaganda piece.
Here is an example :
" All traitors , rebels & leauguers , whitch go about to upsurpe the state , as in the execution of the exemplary punishment upon
them , who have porcured or committed that hannous dissopsal felony & treason upon the Kings person laid decesed & all others who shall be known consenting ,knowing or accepting to the same ."Another interesting aspect of this obscure volume is the description of battles and warfare , and description of the armies.
Here is an example of text:
The number of Dead hordes ? & English were increased by the figure of multiplication one killed a hundred , & a hundred killed ten thousand ,
The manner of the fight was made very difficult and dangerous for the Conquerors' ."
Condition is only acceptable at best :
The vellum shows heavy wear , and consists of 9 books bound in what appears to be original vellum from the time period with History of France written on the spine in period ink.
,There is damage to four leaves of book 6, (ripped in half ). Book 7 is missing 24 leaves , and 14 leaves have a section missing( lower portion of the page see photos.)
On the plus side this is a very rare book , that maybe one of the only editions available at sale on the internet.
I have researched this volume and found and I could not find much information about this author only the printer.
