CIRCA 1860 FRENCH ANIMALIER BRONZE OF A MOTHER SHEEP & HER LAMB BY PJ MENE NoRes
This listing is for a circa 1860 bronze of a mother sheep and her lamb by the famous French Animalier sculptor Pierre-Jules Mene. The bronze measures 5 ¾ inches or 14.5 cm long and is 9 ¼ inches or 23.5 cm high.
The bronze features an intimate scene of a mother sheep and her young lamb. She stands content with a bell around her neck, as her lamb suckles at her. The bronze has a milk chocolate brown patina or color which is all original to the piece.
The bronze is signed on the base "P J MENE". He is considered by many to be the father of the French Animaliersculptors who specialized in animal figures in naturalistic settings. He was a favorite of the court of Napoleon III. Born in Paris in 1810 he was a prodigy and started his own foundry in 1838 at 28 years old. He also started exhibiting at the Paris Salon that year. He won many medals at most of the international fairs at the time, including 1851 and 1862 exhibitions in London. In 1861 he received the Legion d' Honneur. Please reference “The Dictionary of Sculptors in Bronze” by James Mackay page 259.
The bronze is in excellent condition. The patina is all original, and has minor age appropriate variations. A very fine bronze.
Please note you are offerding on a bronze by PJMene. This is not any kind of reproduction or recast.
