Civil War - July 1863 Letter From St Louis Mo - Superb War Content For Sale
SUPERB CONTENT 1863 CIVIL WARLETTER FROM ST. LOUIS, MO.
Lengthy, 3-1/2 pgs letter, approx. 5" x 8", dated at St. Louis, Mo., July 1, 1863, from "Marcus", to his sister, Eliza. Other letters in this correspondence identify him as Marcus Tuttle, and his sister as MissEliza M. Tuttle, in East Douglas, Mass.
Superb content, in which Marcus writes of fightinggoing on in Missouri, and the Militia being called out, and of special interest is his detailed account of going to Jefferson Barracks and seeing the wounded and disabled (he calls them "disenabled")soldiers of Gen. Sherman's Army, andvisitinga friend of his, who had just suffered his third wound since entering the army in 1861.
Includes:
"Warfare is constantly going on in some portions of this State. Militia authorities are issuing orders daily. One regiment was called out yesterday. A private of the above was sun stroke. I have seen enough of military life and its consequences in the several places I have been in since the war commenced, without going to the field to experience it.
The 26th of June, I took the cars on the Iron Mountain Rail Road and rode out ten and one half miles to Jefferson Barracks, which is a very beautiful & healthy locality on the Missouri side, and bordering upon the grand Mississippi River. There was a boat load of wounded and disenabled soldiers from Sherman's Army brought there while I was there, and two others on the way. They have good fare and comfortable quarters. The Barracks are capable of containing from 3500 to 4000subjects. Ward K. was my principle place of business. It had been filled to its utmost capacity by the arrival of those Veterans (disenabled) from Sherman's Army. One among the rest in Ward K, who is rather familiar to you, is Elijah Curtis. I found him writing, and wounded in the inside of his thigh. This makes the third time he has been wounded, andis not yet a cripple. Has been in the serviceever since 1861.He is fleshy, looks healthy, & will return home soon on furlough perfectly well of his last wound, looks natural. I returned in the evening, after having had a friendly visit with an old school mate..."
Very Fine.
