CIVIL WAR DISCHARGE
A fine early vintageand genuine Civil War discharge, the eagle illustrated type with all the hand stamps, and autographs. For a soldier named Brigham Barnes, who served with the 21st Ma. Vols. [ a hard fighting unit that lost most of their men in battle and was finally merged with other regiments once their number was too low to be an organized unit. ]
They fought at the Wilderness, Spottsylvania, Cold Harbor and then Petersburg, where they were caught in the Crater., losing more of their men. This discharge is for a soldier who was in the battle of the Crater., losing his arm and finally discharged. A notation at the top right of the discharge states he is qualified to get an artificial arm from the National Leg and Arm Company.
Note: We will send his military listing and some history of his battle action with the 21st Ma. Vols. Very scarce to findan item related to the Battle of the Crater.
