A LETTER FROM CIVIL WAR UNION SURGEON TO HIS AUNT (6/26/1862).
This original civil war period letter from Doctor David P. Dearborn, a surgeon in the 4th New Hampshire Volunteers, writing to his aunt while in charge of the Regimental Hospitalat James Island in Beaufort, South Carolina. Beaufort was one of several Union enclaves up and down the southern Atlantic coast that were captured early in the war and held by Union troops until the close of the war. They were supplied by the US Navy. Great content in this letter, talks about friends dying, being namedActing Assistant Surgeon to a detachment of his Regiment, being put here by order of General (David) Hunter, and being in charge of a detachment of 8th Michigan as well as entire Regimental Hospital. Also, listed on the bottom of the back of the letter is a list, probably of medicinehe required,as it lists alcohol, ether, opium and etc.. It really shows the severity of war as all of these productswould most likely be used for severe pain relief or for surgeries. I do not think that it was to be part of the letter but was probably a list that the Doctor wrote down to alert the quartermasters of their needs. Although it makes much sense that something like this be found on a letter, as paper wasnt exactly plentiful in the field, I find it very interesting thoughthat it is on this letter as it really makes you realize the importance ofdoctors and surgeons in the army and how serious the work thatlay before them. This iswritten in period ink and is fairly easy to read. The letter is written on light blue colored paper and is approx. 8" x 10 1/4" and has a 4 1/2" tear across the center fold crease. The winner of this sale will also receive a full typed translated copy of this letter in case it is hard for you to read. See pictures forfull letter content. A wonderful looking civil warletterand would be a excellent addition to someones collection or a great start to one. This really would look great in a frame hanging on someones wall.Condition of this item is as shown. Guaranteed to be original.

Please let me know if I misrepresent anything or there is an error in my listing, so that I may fix it before the sales end. Many of the civil war items that I sell have been researched so that I can give you as accurate description as possible, however, being that none of us were around at that time, it can sometimes be difficult. I by no means call myself an expert, although I have spend quite some time over the yearsstudying in this era and am always eager to learn more. I know that there are many who are on here who are experts, and any help that you can give is always welcomed and appreciated. I pride myself in honesty and integrity and strive to be as accurate as possible in my listing and description. As a long time collector and buyer myself, I know how hard it can be to find that in a seller, especially one online. So I will do my best to do so and hope that those who buy from me will also carry those same qualities.
I try and do mainly "true sales" in which the buyers determine the price by having a low (if not .99 cents) starting offer and price (except in certain rare and unique items). I always found those to be most enjoyable and exciting to both the buyer and seller, although I realize that this usually is more beneficial to the buyer. I will NOT entertain any buy it now offers on items that are on sale style listings as I feel this is unfair and dishonest, so please do not ask. I am not here to make a quick "buck" but want to build up a long time loyal customer base. So any other suggestions that you have that can help make this easier or better for you than please let me know so that I can try to incorporate it into my future listings.
Thank you for looking and may the Lord bless you!
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. John 3:17
