Brief Background on Mexican Modernist Sterling Silver Holloware

The contribution of the Mexico City Silversmith to the modernist movement has been largely overlooked by the academic, dealer and collecting communities.
When WWII ended and the 1950’s began, the leading U.S. and European silver producers were largely industrialized. They were committed to mechanized die press production of silver holloware in order to lower labor cost, increase output and theoretically increase demand. This made them rigid and inflexible; dependent upon each design to generate a large volume of sales; which in turn shut the door on variety, spontaneity and creativity. They could not take the risk of aggressively leading their markets into modernism.
At the beginning of the 1950’s the Mexico City silversmith found himself in an enviable position. The Mexican economy, acting as a supplier to the allies and not directly involved in the conflict, was totally intact and had reaped great economic benefit from the war.
The Mexico City silversmith remained as he had been for centuries; a hand craftsman, flexible and able to express his innate creativity to produce unique designs and fill custom orders. He had the freedom to respond to modernism.
A radical departure from traditional colonial design, modernism found ready acceptance with the Mexico City silversmith and his Mexican clientele.
Mexico also became a destination for adventurous and artistically aware travelers from the United States and Europe who discovered they could select from a variety of modernist sterling silver holloware designed and hand made by accomplished Mexico City silversmiths. This was not an option available or affordable for them in the U.S. or Europe.
Due to its low volume handcraft nature there are no figures available on Mexican modernist silver holloware production and export. Unfortunately, a great deal of this art was destroyed in the worldwide silver melts of the 1980’s and 2010’s.
It is my hope that research will be done on these silversmiths and their work, and that their rightful place in the history of modernism will be brought to light.
The following is a list of Mexico City silversmiths who were the most prolific modernists. Many of them sold their pieces through retail outlets in Taxco and Mexico City. They also executed designs for the most prominent Taxco jewelry workshops:

RN
FABIAN
F SANCHEZ
