Col James Obrien 48th Massachusetts Killed At Port Hudson 1863 Funeral Civil War For Sale
An original and very rare Civil War carte de visite [CDV] photograph of the funeral of an heroic Civil War officer....This photo was taken in 1863 by Miller and Freeman, Charlestown, Massachusetts, photographers, and the CDV's were probably distributed privately to those attending the services. This powerful image shows the body of LIEUTENANT COLONEL JAMES O'BRIEN lying in state in ornate patriotic circumstances, probably in Charlestown. He had raised four companies of Irish volunteers earlier in the war, and was second in command of the 48th Massachusetts Infantry. On May 27, 1863, Colonel O'Brien led a "forlorn hope" of 200 volunteers in an assault attempting to create an opening in the Confederate fortifications at Port Hudson, Louisiana. He and many of his men were cut down in a ferocious storm of musket and cannon fire. The failure of the assault led to an extensive siege before the fort finally surrendered many weeks later. The body of the gallant O'Brien was returned home to Massachusetts with honors. Accounts of his death are found in the histories of the Siege of Port Hudson. This is a very rare photograph that belongs in any Civil War collection...Guaranteed original......$3.00 shipping............
