Ca. 1870 Folding Stereoscope * Wet Plate Camera Era * Brass, Glass, Wood For Sale
Make sure to check out all of my sales after you've looked at this one. I've got another great group of listings running this week, and I suspect there will be something of interest to almost everyone. Here's an excellent mid-19th century stereocard viewer. Judging from its design and its construction materials, it probably dates to 1865-75, though it could be even earlier. Stereoscope viewers are outside of my own collecting sphere, but I've seen enough of them over the years to know that this one is somewhat unusual. Although it is a countertop apparatus, it quickly and easily folds down to 9" x 6" x 3", so that it can be easily carried in a coat pocket or purse. Condition is excellent throughout, and the viewer is wholly original. There's a small hairline crack at the periphery of the left lens (see photo), but it doesn't obstruct the view or interfere with the device's operation. All of the brass hardware is in excellent, undamaged condition, and the wood finish -- original throughout -- is in excellent condition. Wood of course is in excellent condition also, with no worm holes or other issues. Comes with a single stereocard, but thousands of others are available weekly on . What you rarely see on or anywhere else is a viewer this old and this nice.Works well. Nice, clear images and, as you can see, the card holder is on a rail that can be moved back and forth to adjust the focus.Shipping weight will be about 5 lb.That's about it. I will pack it carefully and properly. sale participants with no prior response history should also contact me before placing a offer. Buyer prepays and includes shipping. Paypal okay.
