Ca. 1880-1900 Nantucket Lightship Basket...early Little Gem For SaleThis Nantucket Lightship Basket is a beauty. Its small desirable size, and the master's weaving is uniformly tight and even. I can't stress enough how finely woven this is. Some of the finest natural patina I've seen on a very early basket...some of the weavers have turned dark brown, some with a slightly reddish cast. This diminutive work of art is just 4 inches tall, 7 inches tall to top of handle, with a diameter of just under 6 inches. The hand-carved wooden ears would indicate an early period, very possibly late 1800's to the first decade of the 1900's. The wooden disc base is dark from age with at least four finely turned rings, which may be a clue to its maker. Not to be missed.....the handle is absolutely solid, expertly carved and gracefully tapers down to thin, well-shaped delicate ends as they reach for the wooden ears. Fabulous. The rim is solid, as is the base. All in all, far superior to most. As mentioned, there is minor expected wear, but overall the basket is in excellent condition, very tight, very solid for a basket likely more than 100 years old. There are two very small losses in the rim lash, not noticeable due to the darkness of the aged rim. On one side, mid to bottom half, there are about 5 small spots of weaver loss-not easily spotted...all but one are quite small and to be considered minor. One loss is a bit more moderate. But to see these, you have to either look on the underside or hold the basket up in light, which is what I did for the tenth photo. These are minor for the most part, not distractions, and do not affect the tightness of the basket. It is tight and solid. This really is a gem, and comes without any apologies. Free insured shipping. Please ask any questions that you may have. Very modest starting price, and a very reasonable reserve to protect my investment. Whether you're a novice or an advanced collector, this will be an excellent basket for your Americana collection.
