Ca.1860 Tintype - Two Salty Western Frontiersmen In Buckskins - Found In Texas For Sale
Quarter-Plate Tintype by unidentified photographer. This is a Peter Neff patented "Melainotype" on thicker iron sheet than usual and is stamped/embossed at one edge of the plate with the usual Neff Patent markings. This image has no real provenance, but only hearsay that was passed along to me when I bought it about four years ago. The seller told me the image originally had surfaced at a small Texas sale. I liked the image anyway, regardless of where it had surfaced. It had a Texas "look" (or at least a western "look") to me so I bought it. The image is fully housed in a case with an old spine repair. This early cased tintype is a true American Frontier image. Thetwo men are unidentified,at present, butthey obviouslyare men of substance and not just your ordinary citizen. The man at left wears a large hat and a longhide coat with fur trim on the cuffs and collar, and fringe completely around the bottom edge of the coat. He also wears a beaded Indian sash of some type, and his trousers are tucked into his boots. The taller man at right wears a very wide-brimmed hat that reminds me of the huge hat worn by Texan Ben McCulloch as seen in early woodcuts of him as a young man. He wears a citizens jacket and shirt and he too has his trousers tucked into his boots. Oddly, he wears one spur as the spur leather can be seen on the front of his right boot. He does not wear a spur on his other boot! The image is very crisp and clear, but the tonal range for the backdrop does not offer a lot of contrast. The pad side of the case has tears in the old and very dry velvet (visible in scans). The plate itself is inVery Goodcondition and there is a scan of the naked plate and an enlargement of same so that you can view their clothing in better detail. I don't know if these guys are early Texans or not, but thisis a "real deal" image from the pre-Civil War days of the Old West. Shipped well-packed via USPS Priority Mail in Medium Rate Box for $11.50. I pay insurance if item sells for $100 or more. Guaranteed Original. See five scans for details.
