Painting 12.5" x - 15" x 17" DESCRIPTION:
Very beautiful impressionist garden landscape by well-listed California artist,
Margaret Cox Herrick (1865 - 1950).
Heavy oils on board. Original Arts and Crafts gold wood frame.
Signed by the artist, lower right, "M.C.Herrick".
Inscribed on the reverse with the artist's name and address in Piedmont, California. Partial gallery label on the reverse. An owner's name, Mrs. Isobel McKee" on the backing paper along with a bio of the artist.
A very fine early 20th century American West Coast painting with great brush work, an excellent composition, and radiant colors. This piece is very much in the French style of Impressionism and reminds me of the paintings by Monet of his garden.
This painting was probably a view of a garden and house in Piedmont, which is near Oakland in the hills. Maybe Margaret Cox Herrick's own house. AGE: Circa 1915 - 1925 CONDITION:
Good condition, as shown in the photos and with the following noted: Several very tiny chip of paint loss to the surface (however they are not really visible unless looked for). Very light crazing in a few areas, but the paint seems to be firmly adhered to the brown board support. The painting does not need a cleaning and appears to be unvarnished, or lightly varnished. The signature on the front is clear, but looks a bit worn.
The frame is likely original to the work and in very much in the Arts and Crafts style. It is in good condition with some light wear and scratches. The painting would benefit from and display better in a larger, wider period frame.
