Capodimonte Lipstick/Cigarette Cherub Carousel Music Box ~ Thorens Movement ~
Up for sale is this very nice vintage Capodimonte musical carousel cigarette/lipstick holder. This highly collectible item is from the late 50's when cigarette smoking was very prevalent. I would estimate that this carousel dates to the early 30's or 40's. It is decorated with images of cherubs at the top and bottom as well as the six individual panels. When wound, this is supposed to rotate while playing "Tales of Vienna Woods". As it turns, the panels rotate to reveal silver plated pockets for holding the lipstick or cigarettes. Three demonic appearing heads make up the feet of the carousel. Overall, this item stands roughly 11-1/2" tall to the top of the cherub finial and is around 8-1/2" in diameter at the base. There is a tag on the bottom of the base indicating that it has a Swiss Thorens Movement.
Sadly, the music box portion of this carousel stopped working. It was working fine at one time but now when you wind it, it feels as if the spring has sprung. Hopefully someone out there has the knowledge to repair this. Cosmetically, there is crazing to the porcelain as you can obviously see. The silver-plated portions are in great shape and overall, this displays nicely. Because the movement no longer operates, I am selling this AS-IS with NO RETURNS.
