Bookplate on front pasted endpaper is engraved with anillustration of the school and the handwritten notation, \"Presented to G.Mitchell / 1st Prize / Junior German Class / 31st July 1858.\"

There is a small bookbinder\'s line stampedat the bottom of the front pasted endpaper, very possibly the Edinburgh bindery Seton andMacKenzie, though the last few characters are blurred and difficult to decipher (see photo). All page edges are marbled and pages are clean, supple and fine including thetissue-protected frontis portrait engraving of Schiller.

Thespine has 5 raised hubs and is gilt-titled on a black leather label in onecompartment; decorative stamping to the other compartments. The cover islightly shelf worn with some a bit of scuffing to front board. Edges and hingesare rubbed and there is half-inch chip from the top of the spine. The interiorfront hinge had broken; a neat, invisible and judicious repair with archivalglue is holding the joint well but a more permanent repair may be desirable.Rear endpaper has a short tear at gutter; hinge is tight.
