From 1915-1940’s 3-dimentional Chalkware figurines were given out as carnival prizes throughout the United States. Chalkware figurines are created using a plaster molding and painting process.
Leslie Harradine began as an apprentice at Doulton Lambethstudios in 1902-1912 designing vases. However he was more interested in figure modeling and moved with his brother to a farm in Canada. He return to Bedfordshire with his wife and child after WWI. He then worked for Royal Doulton as a freelance artist only.
The English porcelain duplicate design of this chalkware figure is Royal Doulton’s HN 1809, Cissie. Royal Doulton’s Cissie wears shades of pink with a blue bonnet; the chalk ware figurine was painted with yellows and a blue skirt. Examination of the figurine reveals Leslie Harradine’s original design.
Cissie is from TheSeries:Child Study and stands 5” tall
Logically it can be assumed that this chalk ware figure was designed by Leslie Harradine as Carniville-Ware while he was living in Canada.
Royal Doulton produced their Cissie figurine: 1937-1993
4 7/8” tall, 3” x 5/8” wide base
This chalk ware is in decent condition for her age: Paint and age wear are visible; the back of her bonnet is damaged/missing, as well as a small part on the bonnet rim. Chips may be viewed on the front rim of the bonnet and on the skirt, no repairs. Please view photos!
