Catholic Bishops Vintage Artist Egino Weinert German Unique Pieta Bronze Icon For Sale
Bishop Paul Leonard Hagarty was a beloved friend of my mother Bertha, the founder of Church-Woman Antiques.
He was also the first Bishop of Nassau, and served previously as Vicar Apostolic of the Bahamas Islands. His estate items are on consignment for sale thanks to a friend of St. John's Abbey, where he spent his final years.
The Icon you are offerding on from the Bishops collection measures 6.5”X 5.25" inches, and weighs approximately 1.2 pounds; there are a few copies out there today of this Icon, but this is an original.
Catholic German Artist Egino Weinert died on September 4, 2012, at age 92, and as such his early (and some consider his best work) has become very desirable and collectable.
The vintage piece on sale has been retired from production, and was such, is very special; none of these are re-casts, they are original first casts. Most have been out of production for years.
German painter and sculptor Egino Weinert began his artistic training after entering the monastery of the Benedictine Missionaries. He left the order before taking final vows.
In 1941 he was imprisoned after refusing to utter "Heil Hitler." Several years later he lost his right hand in an accident. He taught himself to work with his opposite hand and began his art career anew. He later became a favorite of Pope John Paul II, and an artist to the Vatican.
We are told by a recent visitor to Germany, that the availability of his early work is limited and their prices have gone higher since the artist death last year.
Good luck offerding!
