Item: cca. 1671 OGILBY OR MONTANUS VIZTLIPUZTLI IDOLUM MEXICANORUM AZTEC COLOR PRINT

Condition: Near Very Good, considering age. Age-toning, as expected. A few minor spots on the lower margin. Some corner and edge wear. Two marks from tape remnants on the upper two corners from previous mounting/framing. Reverse has a solid tape stripe through the middle in order to stabilize the natural fold, originating from the atlas. Otherwise nice color and good state of preservation.

Dimensions: Sheet: 14 ½ X 16 3/8 Inches (7 X 41.5 cm); Image: 11 ¼ X 13 ½ Inches (29 X 34 cm)

Very Nice and interesting Hand-Colored Engraving of the Aztec War God Viztlipuztli, as it was imagined by Arnoldus Montanus (Dutch) and also Published in English Translation by John Ogilby. It is unclear to which of the two authors this Engraving is attributed, but it is clearly known that neither of them ever visited the New World and therefore, Montanus’ interpretation of the Aztec Gods and Temples was obviously inaccurate, as can be inferred from this print. Needless to say that not many people were in a position, in those days, to contradict these images and therefore represented the European Aztec image for some time to come.
